How Music Helps Young People Build Confidence and Creativity at Wave

Music plays a central role at Wave Children’s Charity, offering young people on Hayling Island a unique space to express themselves, explore new skills and grow in confidence. Our dedicated music room and recording studio are among the most popular parts of the Wave hub, giving children and teenagers the chance to discover their abilities in a relaxed, friendly environment. This blog explores how music supports confidence, creativity and wellbeing, and why it has become such an important part of youth support at Wave.

Music as a tool for youth development

Music is a powerful way for young people to express their emotions and build a sense of identity. For many children and teenagers, traditional activities can feel intimidating, but music provides a softer, more creative entry point that encourages participation. At Wave, our music sessions are designed to be open, inclusive and accessible, allowing young people of all abilities to take part.

Our aim is to give young people the chance to experiment, make mistakes, try new sounds and build skills at their own pace. This supportive approach helps them grow in confidence and feel proud of their progress, whether they are learning an instrument for the first time or exploring songwriting and recording.

A space where young people feel free to express themselves

The dedicated music room at Wave offers a space where young people can relax and be creative without pressure. The environment is calm and supportive, which helps them feel comfortable expressing who they are. For some young people, this might mean learning a new chord on the guitar, while for others it might be writing lyrics, practising vocals or simply enjoying making music with friends.

Music is particularly effective for young people who find it difficult to communicate verbally. The chance to express emotions through sound, rhythm or performance can reduce stress, improve mood and build emotional resilience.

The role of our Music Mentor

Wave is fortunate to have a dedicated Music Mentor, Saul, who provides guidance, encouragement and structured activities. His sessions help young people build skills in a way that feels fun and achievable. With his support, many attendees have discovered a passion for music they didn’t know they had.

Saul’s work also helps build teamwork and friendship. Young people learn how to listen to one another, communicate, take turns and work together towards a shared goal, all of which are essential life skills. His calm, supportive presence has made the music sessions one of the most loved parts of Wave’s weekly activities.

From beginners to confident performers

One of the most rewarding aspects of the music programme is seeing how much young people grow over time. Some attendees start as complete beginners who feel shy or nervous about even touching an instrument. With encouragement and practice, many quickly develop confidence and begin trying new things.

Over the past two years, young people from Wave have performed at local festivals, open mic nights and community events. These experiences are incredibly valuable, giving them a chance to showcase their hard work and feel proud of their achievements. Performing in front of others builds confidence, resilience and a sense of accomplishment that stays with them long after the event.

For some, music has become a new passion that they continue exploring at home and school. For others, the sessions simply offer a relaxed and enjoyable activity where they can spend quality time with friends.

Building social connections through music

Music naturally brings people together. At Wave, the music sessions encourage friendships between young people from different schools, age groups and backgrounds. Working together on a song or band practice helps build trust, communication skills and a shared sense of achievement.

These social connections are especially important for young people who may feel isolated or struggle to make friends. The music room provides a welcoming environment where everyone can contribute something, whether it is playing an instrument, suggesting ideas or simply offering encouragement.

The sense of belonging that comes from being part of a group is one of the reasons why music is such a positive part of mental wellbeing for young people.

Creativity without pressure

Music at Wave is not about perfection. It is about discovery, exploration and enjoyment. Young people are encouraged to try new things without worrying about getting everything right. This freedom helps reduce anxiety and builds resilience, as they learn that it is normal to make mistakes while learning something new.

Creativity also plays a key role in supporting problem solving and flexible thinking. By experimenting with rhythm, melody and structure, young people develop cognitive skills that support learning in other areas of life.

How music supports emotional wellbeing

Music is proven to have a positive impact on emotional wellbeing, helping young people:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve mood
  • Increase confidence
  • Develop self awareness
  • Build resilience

At Wave, we see these benefits every week. Young people often arrive feeling tired or overwhelmed from school, but after spending time playing instruments, singing or working together, their mood lifts and they leave feeling more settled and positive.

The space gives them time to unwind and decompress, which is essential for healthy emotional development.

Opportunities for the future

For some young people, music at Wave may spark lifelong interests or even future aspirations. The confidence gained through performing, practising and collaborating can open the door to new opportunities, whether in creative arts, music education or community involvement.

Even for those who do not pursue music long term, the skills they develop, such as teamwork, communication, commitment and self belief, remain valuable in all areas of life.

Why music matters to Wave

Music is more than an activity; it is a tool for building stronger, more confident young people. It supports their emotional wellbeing, boosts creativity and helps them feel part of a safe and welcoming community. By providing free access to a music room and recording studio, Wave ensures that every young person, regardless of background, has the opportunity to explore their potential.

Wave Children’s Charity is proud to support young people across Hayling Island and continues to expand its creative programmes to ensure they have the best possible opportunities to thrive.
