Wave Children’s Charity plays an important role in supporting young people on Hayling Island by giving them a safe, welcoming and positive place to spend time after school. Since opening our community hub in 2022, Wave has become a trusted part of the local community, helping children and teenagers build confidence, form friendships and enjoy free activities in a relaxed environment. This blog explores what we do, why our work is important and how Wave continues to make a difference to families across Hayling Island.
Our mission to support young people
Wave was created to give young people a supportive space where they feel valued and included. Many families on Hayling Island had noticed that there were limited after school options for older primary and secondary aged children. Young people often need somewhere to go where they can relax, socialise and enjoy structured activities without pressure.
Our mission is to help young people grow, connect and thrive by offering a safe space filled with encouragement, creativity and positive experiences. We want every child who walks through our doors to feel welcome, listened to and supported. Wave stands for We All Value Each Other, a message that guides everything we do.
How Wave began
The idea for Wave developed from a clear need in the community for more youth support on Hayling Island. When the former TSB bank building in Mengham became available, it provided the perfect opportunity to create a dedicated youth space. With the help of volunteers, trustees and supporters, the building was refurbished and transformed into a comfortable and vibrant hub designed specifically for young people.
The aim was to create a supportive environment where children and teenagers could enjoy themselves, learn new skills and form friendships. From the moment Wave opened, families responded positively. Young people quickly settled into the routine of attending sessions, and Wave has continued to grow ever since.
What young people can enjoy at Wave
Wave offers free weekly sessions during term time for a range of age groups. Our timetable includes sessions for years 5 and 6, sessions for young people from year 7 onwards and dedicated Wednesday music sessions. Each session provides activities tailored to the group, but all have the same friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Young people can choose from a variety of activities, including:
- Games and team challenges
- Pool and table football
- Arts and crafts
- Film evenings
- Board games
- Console games
- A comfortable chill out area
- Group activities with prizes
- Free use of computers
A highlight of every session is the free hot meal we provide. This adds comfort and warmth to the evening and ensures all young people have something nourishing to eat while they are with us.
Music and creativity at Wave
Music is one of the most popular parts of Wave and a key way we support confidence and creativity in young people. Our dedicated music room and recording studio give children and teenagers the chance to try instruments, practise with friends or explore songwriting and recording. Our Music Mentor guides them through the process, helping them build skills and discover new interests.
Some young people who started as beginners have gone on to perform at local events, open mic nights and competitions. These experiences help them grow in confidence, learn teamwork and express themselves in new ways. The music programme has become a valued part of our youth support on Hayling Island.
Supporting emotional wellbeing
Wave places great importance on mental and emotional wellbeing. Many young people need a calm, reassuring place where they can unwind after school and talk to friendly adults if they need support. Our volunteers help create a stable, respectful environment where young people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
We encourage kindness, communication and cooperation. If disagreements arise, volunteers help guide young people through problem solving and understanding each other. These small but meaningful interactions build resilience and improve emotional wellbeing in a natural and supportive way.
The impact of our volunteers
Volunteers are at the heart of Wave. Without them, we simply could not run our sessions. They welcome the young people, prepare food, support activities, help with music sessions and make sure the hub remains safe and enjoyable.
Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds, but all share a passion for supporting young people on Hayling Island. Their patience, positivity and encouragement help young people feel valued and understood. Families regularly mention how much they appreciate the volunteers and the difference they make.
How Wave is funded
Wave is run through donations, grants, partnerships and community support. We are grateful for the help of The National Lottery Community Fund and for the generosity of local businesses who donate food and supplies for our sessions. These contributions allow us to provide free hot meals, creative resources and regular after school activities without any cost to families.
Why Wave matters to Hayling Island
Wave has become an important part of the local community because it offers young people something meaningful, consistent and positive. Families often tell us how much Wave has helped their children develop confidence, independence and lasting friendships. It provides structure for those who need it and freedom for those who simply want a place to relax.
Our work supports young people at a key stage in their development, giving them a safe environment where they can build social skills, explore interests and enjoy time with others their age. Wave strengthens community connections and brings people together with a shared purpose.
